Gilbert just came back from the Great River. His old friend, Sunday, who joined the Army during the war, has asked after him.
After he takes a rest, he decides to see Sunday. They recall their childhood memories.
During the course of their conversation, Nkoyeni enters. She happens to be the youngest sister of Sunday’s siblings.
Gilbert remembers how Nkoyeni used to get angry whenever he called her his wife. Gilbert would tease her repeatedly, and both his eldest brother, Sunday, and himself would make jokes about it.
She is now in Standard Four.
They end their conversation by debating whether or not a female child should be sent to school. After all, her education ends “in the kitchen” of another man.
