They debate “state security,” the shortage of food, and the invasion of “water hyacinths” in the lagoon, which act as a metaphor for the choking corruption of the state. To pass time and assert his dominance, the Commandant forces new or lower-ranking prisoners to perform their “curriculum vitae”. Essentially, the whole curriculum vitae performance involves the re-enactment of the crimes that brought them to prison.
