The characters in Path of Lucas are Lucas Clarkson, Isabelle Bourgeois, Lucy Ferguson, John Clarkson, Elizabeth Clarkson, Steve Lewis, France Bourgeois, Julia, and Jim. In this section, we are going to examine these characters among several other characters in the text.
Lucas Clarkson
Lucas Clarkson is the deeply devoted protagonist of the novel. He is a direct representation of the author’s real-life father, Roger Bellefeuille. He is described as a handsome, gentle young man who possesses his mother’s deep dark-brown eyes and a strong physical build inherited from his father.
Lucas’s character is defined by his selfless sacrifices for his family. He abandons his dream of becoming a certified mechanic to save his father’s farm from bankruptcy. When his wife Isabelle suffers a severe psychotic breakdown, Lucas refuses the doctor’s advice to institutionalise her. Instead, he drains his savings and eventually uses an unorthodox picture-cube method to help restore her memory.
Even in his final moments as an elderly man, he hides his own catastrophic, fatal heart attacks through sheer willpower so he can finish telling his life story to awaken his daughter Lucy from her coma.
Isabelle Bourgeois / Clarkson
Isabelle is Lucas’s beautiful, shy wife, whose character is based on the author’s real-life mother, Gisele. Growing up in a deeply impoverished household, she suffered intense physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her parents, which left her with severe, unhealed trauma.
Following the compounded grief of multiple family tragedies, Isabelle’s mind breaks, and she falls into a profound psychotic depression where she completely loses her memory of her husband and children. With Lucas’s patience and unconventional support, she miraculously regains her memories and returns to her role as a loving mother.
Later in life, after realising the immense silent burden her husband has carried for decades, she actively takes control of her physical and mental health to be a strong partner. She enjoys a golden era of travel with Lucas before suddenly passing away from a massive heart attack.
Lucy Clarkson / Ferguson
Lucy is Lucas and Isabelle’s only daughter. She is the central figure of the novel’s framing narrative. As an adult, she is involved in a horrific car accident that leaves her with a severe traumatic brain injury which traps her in a deep coma.
Growing up, Lucy is described as a bright, athletic girl with a passion for reading who always shared a close, loving relationship with her parents. She faces her own major challenge as a teenager when she becomes unexpectedly pregnant at sixteen, but unlike her mother’s terrifying experience with out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Lucy receives unconditional love and support from Lucas and Isabelle.
Lucy miraculously wakes from her coma in the present day just before her father passes away, and she eventually finds the immense physical and emotional strength to stand up and deliver his heartfelt eulogy at his funeral.
Richard Clarkson
Richard is Lucas and Isabelle’s firstborn son, conceived before their marriage. He grows up to be a charismatic and artistic young man. He is known as the fun-loving joker of the family because he brings joy and a vibrant spirit to those around him.
He marries his girlfriend Chelsea and welcomes a beautiful baby girl named Paige. Tragically, just as he begins his life as a young father, Richard is diagnosed with aggressive throat cancer that later spreads aggressively to his lymph nodes.
After enduring gruelling treatments and briefly experiencing a miraculous remission, he succumbs to the terminal illness at just twenty-two years old. His death deeply devastates the Clarkson family.
John Clarkson
John is Lucas’s father. He is a respected farmer who initially owns a large, successful farm with over four hundred acres of land. He is a serious, industrious patriarch whose primary goal is to build wealth and support his children’s futures.
However, his deep devotion to his family becomes his undoing when he secretly drains his finances to pay off his daughter Mary’s mortgage and support her alcoholic husband This decision drives him to the brink of bankruptcy. He begs Lucas to abandon his mechanic career to save the farm.
John lives his final years with dignity on the farm, thanks to Lucas’s profound sacrifice, before passing away peacefully surrounded by his family.

Elizabeth Clarkson
Elizabeth is Lucas’s mother. She is a soft-spoken, gentle, yet emotionally and physically strong matriarch. She is renowned in the family for her incredible cooking, particularly her homemade cookies and award-winning pies, which she uses to nurture her children and grandchildren.
She is an emotional anchor for Lucas in the novel, especially when Isabelle falls into her severe psychotic depression. She forms a loving, accepting bond with Isabelle from the very beginning. She makes the shy girl feel truly welcomed into the Clarkson family.
In her later years, Elizabeth sadly develops severe Alzheimer’s disease. She loses her memory before peacefully passing away in a nursing home with a smile on her face.
Steve Lewis
Steve is Lucas’s lifelong best friend, the two having been inseparable since the third grade. Growing up in a poor family that affected his self-esteem, Steve found confidence through Lucas’s constant encouragement.
He pursues his passion and joins the Air Force, where he earns his pilot’s license, achieves his dream of flying, and reaches the rank of lieutenant.
Even from afar, Steve remains deeply loyal to Lucas. He writes letters to him and visits his family. In a way, Steve is positioned as a reminder of the youthful freedom Lucas sacrificed.
Steve’s life is tragically cut short when his plane malfunctions and crashes into a mountain. His devastating loss profoundly impacts Lucas.
France Bourgeois
France is Isabelle’s older sister. She is her protector and confidante throughout their brutally abusive childhood. She is an ambitious and vibrant woman who always dreamed of escaping their rural farming life to move back to Quebec City. France is characterised by her lively sense of humour, her love of nature, and her ability to bring light and laughter into any room she enters.
Later in life, France struggles with severe obesity and type II diabetes, which puts a fatal strain on her heart. Isabelle desperately attempts to help her regain her health, but France dies from massive heart attacks at only thirty-two years old. Her death triggers Isabelle’s complete mental breakdown.
James Clarkson
James is Lucas’s older brother who initially works alongside him and their father on the Clarkson family farm. He is married to Debra, and together they have three children: Paul, Donna, and Scott.
Because Donna and Scott have developmental disabilities, James eventually makes the difficult decision to move his family to Cornwall to provide them with better schooling and specialised therapy. To support this transition, James moves away from farming and secures a new job trucking logs.
James maintains a close and supportive relationship with Lucas. He physically helps him move his family to Uxbridge. Also, he continually keeps in touch with him over the years.
Mary Clarkson
Mary is Lucas’s much older sister who endures a highly tragic and difficult adult life. She is married to an alcoholic man named Joe, who refuses to work and fails to provide for their growing family.
Mary’s financial desperation forces her father, John, to secretly pay off her mortgage and buy her groceries. Her life is further shattered when her young son, Darcy, is tragically struck and killed by a car while leading a cow across the road.
Even though her parents plead with her to leave her increasingly abusive husband, Mary refuses to abandon her marriage. Her constant refusal causes deep sorrow for the Clarkson family.
Julia
Julia is the granddaughter of Mr. Thomas, the wealthy man Isabelle works for as a housemaid. She is a deeply supportive friend to Isabelle. This is evident when Isabelle discovers she might be pregnant out of wedlock. Julia personally drives a terrified Isabelle to see Dr. Bates in Alexandria and holds her hand while she receives the life-changing test results.
She constantly encourages Isabelle to confide in Lucas and build a life with him rather than fear her parents’ judgment. Julia’s loyalty to Isabelle is later honoured when she serves as the maid of honour at Lucas and Isabelle’s wedding.
Chelsea
Chelsea is Richard’s wife and the mother of Lucas and Isabelle’s first grandchild, a little girl named Paige. She unexpectedly becomes pregnant at a young age, shortly after Lucy’s pregnancy is announced. Richard’s family helps them settle into an apartment together.
Chelsea deeply loves Richard and stays by his side throughout his gruelling, ultimately fatal battle with throat and lymph node cancer. Following Richard’s tragic death, she relies on Lucas and Isabelle for support until she begins dating a new, unemployed boyfriend who drives recklessly around the toddlers.
When Lucas gently confronts the boyfriend about his dangerous driving, the boyfriend lies to Chelsea. This prompts her to angrily sell her mobile home and move away, devastatingly taking baby Paige out of Lucas and Isabelle’s lives.
Dr. Jones
Dr. Jones is the lead psychiatrist at the General Hospital in Cornwall who treats Isabelle during her severe mental breakdown. He formally diagnoses her with psychotic depression. He explicitly warns Lucas that her mind has shut down and created a fantasy world to survive her suppressed trauma.
Dr. Jones is a realistic but compassionate doctor who tries various medications and even electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in an attempt to cure Isabelle. After nearly a year of unsuccessful clinical treatments, he reluctantly advises Lucas that Isabelle may need to be permanently institutionalised. However, he signs a release form allowing Lucas to take Isabelle out of the hospital, an unorthodox risk that successfully triggers her recovery.
Jim
Jim is the brother-in-law of James’s wife, Debra, and a highly skilled Class A Mechanic who owns his own garage in Uxbridge. He recognises Lucas’s intense passion and natural talent for auto mechanics. Therefore, he offers him a life-changing apprenticeship.
He generously promises to help pay for Lucas’s tuition for his mechanic’s certification. He arranges a country house for Lucas’s young family to rent.
In other words, Jim is the catalyst for Lucas’s brief period of pursuing his dream before Lucas is forced to abandon it and return to the family farm. Even after Lucas leaves, Jim remains a supportive friend. He continually tells Lucas that he is always welcome to return to work at the garage.
Mark Ferguson
Mark is Lucy’s devoted husband and a hardworking defence lawyer. He is working late on a huge court case when he receives the devastating news about Lucy’s severe car accident. He immediately rushes to the General Hospital to be by her side. In the Intensive Care Unit, he holds his comatose wife’s hand and weeps. He questions why such a tragedy would happen to such an incredible person. Mark is the first person to feel Lucy squeeze his hand as she begins to miraculously wake from her coma.
Justin
Justin is a friend of Richard’s who begins dating a sixteen-year-old Lucy. When Lucy unexpectedly becomes pregnant, Justin is initially terrified but proves his honourable intentions during a tense, intimidating boat ride with Lucas and Isabelle. He firmly promises Lucas that he will marry Lucy, provide for their new family, and be a great father.
True to his word, Justin marries Lucy in a beautiful dream wedding paid for by Lucas. He proudly welcomes his son, Daniel, and stands by Lucy as they build their lives together.
Mr. Bourgeois
Mr. Bourgeois is Isabelle’s father, a former resident of Quebec City who moved his large family to a rural farm in Alexandria. He is a deeply flawed man who struggled with severe alcoholism and subjected Isabelle to years of intense emotional abuse.
Later in life, he develops severe emphysema and becomes reliant on an oxygen tank. This leaves him physically weak and unable to work much. Confronting his mortality, he experiences a change of heart, begins to appreciate nature, and tearfully asks Isabelle for her forgiveness.
He passes away on a cold winter night in 1969, with his final words being a plea for Isabelle’s forgiveness, which she mercifully grants him.
Arthur and Stella Lewis
Arthur and Stella are the loving, protective parents of Lucas’s best friend, Steve Lewis. They heavily struggle with the anxiety of Steve joining the Air Force, especially since Arthur lost his younger brother, Tom, in World War II. Stella is well-known in town for her award-winning baked goods, most prominently her delicious lemon meringue pies which she frequently sells at the general store.
They consider Lucas to be like a second son to them and welcome him warmly into their home with open arms whenever he visits. Tragically, they must endure the heartbreak of losing their only son when Steve is killed in a plane crash in Alberta.
Dr. Coleman
Dr. Coleman is the expert obstetrician and gynaecologist who diligently cares for Isabelle during her high-risk pregnancies. He explicitly warns Isabelle about the severe, life-threatening dangers of having another child after her highly complicated delivery with Lucy.
When Isabelle goes into premature labour with Thomas, Dr. Coleman rushes to the hospital to perform an emergency delivery since there is no time for a caesarean section. He skillfully navigates a terrifying situation; he untangles the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck and saves Isabelle when she begins to severely haemorrhage. His medical expertise and quick actions are crucial in ensuring both Isabelle and her miracle baby, Thomas, survive the traumatic birth.
