Here’s a brief look at the kind of analysis you’ll receive:

“Setting in literature refers to the time, place, and social environment in which a story takes place. The setting of Yellow-Yellow can be approached from different prisms: geographical, temporal, and social. To begin with the geographical setting, the novel is set in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. In the first four chapters of the novel, the setting is Zilafeya’s village which is at the heart of the Niger Delta, devastated by oil spills, pollution, and poverty. There is a change in environment to Port Harcourt in the subsequent chapters of the text. This change in setting establishes the contrast between rural and urban life. The points of convergence between the two environments are the hardship and the exploitation in both places. In between, the author also sneaks in the magnificence of Lagos metropolis during Zilafeya’s trip with Lolo to Lagos, to impress upon the narrator that there is a city more magnificent than Port Harcourt. The temporal setting of the novel is the late 20th century Nigeria. The period reflects a postcolonial Nigeria, where political instability and economic struggles push people towards migration and survival strategies. Going by the several references and details in the text, it is safe to assert that the novel is set during the military regime of General Sanni Abacha. From the viewpoint of social setting, the novel portrays a Nigerian society that assumes biracial women are morally loose because of the colour of their skin. This society objectifies and misjudges them, coupled with the gender inequality and exploitation women in the novel endure. That this society thrives on economic inequality is something that cannot be ignored. The wealth gap between the oil-rich elites and the struggling masses is evident. Admiral, for example, lives in luxury, while villagers suffer the consequences of oil spills. The psychological setting leaves us with Zilafeya’s inner world. She struggles, among other things, with her inner conflict about being biracial and her disillusionment with the city. It captures her transformation from a naive village girl to a self-aware woman.”
