Description

Study Guide: Matigari by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o is a detailed analysis of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s novel, Matigari. The story is set in a newly independent nation that has simply traded white colonial rule for a Black neo-colonial dictatorship. The country is ruled by “His Excellency Ole Excellence,” who uses the propagandistic “Voice of Truth” radio station to ban strikes, student protests, and opposition parties. The environment is highly militarised, with heavily armed police, riot-control units, and informers everywhere.

Matigari by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o begins with Matigari ma Njirũũngi, a patriot who has spent decades in the forests and mountains fighting a gruelling war of liberation against a colonialist named Settler Williams. Believing the war is finally over, Matigari buries his AK47, pistol, and sword under the roots of a massive mũgumo (fig) tree. He replaces his weapons with a “belt of peace” and sets out to reunite his scattered family and reclaim the sprawling house he built with his own hands. However, Matigari soon discovers that the post-independence nation is far from the paradise he envisioned.

This Literature PADI study guide offers a comprehensive analysis of the novel, covering its background, setting, plot summary, part-to-part summary and analysis, narrative devices, characters, themes, and memorable quotes.
