Study Guide: Kinjeketile by Ebrahim N. Hussein is a detailed analysis of Ebrahim Hussein’s play, Kinjeketile. The play is a historical tragedy set against the backdrop of the 1905–1907 Maji Maji Rebellion, an anti-colonial uprising in German East Africa (modern-day Tanzania).
Kinjeketile tells the story of how Kinjeketile, a seer and spiritual leader, uses a mixture of history, myth, and politics to unite several ethnic groups in their resistance against German colonial rule. The eponymous play was first written in Swahili and performed in 1967. It was later translated into English in 1970. The play portrays how German colonialists imposed forced labour, exploitation, and punitive systems on East African natives. They put Africans to work on their cotton plantations under severe measures in a way characteristic of black slaves during the slave trade. Any attempt at respite by any of the workers is met with brutal beating.
