Description

Study Guide: Redemption Road by Elma Shaw is a detailed analysis of Elma Shaw’s post-war novel, Redemption Road. The novel is one of the two African prose texts recommended for the harmonized Literature-in-English syllabus for senior secondary schools (2026-2030) in West Africa. The text will be used for WASSCE, NECOSSCE, and other equivalent O-Level exams within the timeframe.

Redemption Road: The Quest for Peace and Justice in Liberia (2008) tells the redemptive story of Bendu and other victims of the Liberian civil war as they navigate the murky waters of a traumatic past they shared with their country, in pursuit of closure, justice, and peace. We see these characters confront their troubling past in order to heal from the scars the war has left them with. The novel focuses on Bendu in particular as she navigates her way towards redemption. The story is set during the Charles Taylor’s government in Liberia when Liberians are still recovering from the scars of the civil war.

  1. You people are doing a brilliant job for we the Literature-in-English teachers in West Africa.
Once again, thank you for simplifying most of these selected literary works in WASSCE and others. We’re grateful.
