Description
Study Guide: New Tongue by Elizabeth Kamara is a detailed analysis of Elizabeth Kamara’s poem, “New Tongue.” The poem, which is one of the numerous poems in the poet’s To Cross for a Daughter and other Poems, is among the six poems recommended for the harmonized Literature-in-English syllabus for senior secondary schools (2026-2030) in West Africa. The text will be used for WASSCE, NECOSSCE, and other equivalent O-Level exams within the timeframe.
“New Tongue” is a forty-six-line poem that mourns the total detachment from tradition by a young generation of Africans as they adopt “borrowed” practices, and confine the ashes of their own cultural practices “into the bottomless sea.” The poem undeniably calls the attention of Africans to how they have superimposed Western (or, to be less specific, non-African) values over their own values and how they have come to identify with values that consequently place theirs in the backwaters of history.
This study guide by Literature Padi does a detailed analysis of the poem, along the lines of summary, stanza-by-stanza analysis, figures of speech, mood and tone, and the themes in the poem.
