Pierre Eugene Meunier

Pierre Eugene Meunier was born in Grand, a village of Lorraine in Eastern France in 1926. He left France for Nigeria in the employment of SCOA in 1948.

Pierre Eugene Meunier became a Nigerian citizen in 1978. He was a prolific poet, story-writer and playwright with several works to his name. Some of them have been translated into Hausa and staged in and around Zaria.

One such work is Zumji and Uchenna, a tragic play that tells the story of two passionate lovers from different ethnic groups whose marriage was disallowed by their families on the account of their ethnic lovers. The lovers, Zumji and Uchenna, pursue undauntedly their path to wedlock, only for some demented lovers of either of the two to kill them in thirst of vengeance. The play is a demonstration of the chaos a society ruled by tribal hatred and vengeance is susceptible to.

Zumji and Uchenna is however emphatic about how love defies ethnic and cultural differences. The play explores the themes of love, tribalism, murder, and vengeance.

Pierre Eugene Meunier’s plays are characterized by simple but powerful messages and terse dialogues.
